Singer of the Year
2015

Bailey Allen

Congratulations to our Young Singer of the Year for 2014-15, Bailey Allen! Bailey truly embodies the spirit of YSOC, consistently giving her all in performances and rehearsals, and in community service. She always welcomes newcomers with a smile on her face and an enthusiasm to show them the way. She is a self-motivated leader, and showed that this year when she donated half of her Bat-Mitzvah money to start a scholarship fund for other members who cannot afford the fees for YSOC. Keep up the great work!!!

Young Singers of Orange County teaches children musicality and self esteem while inspiring them to engage in community service.

YSOC is a nonprofit community service based organization. It is for children grades k-10 who participate in a choir which performs concerts at schools, hospitals, elderly-care facilities and community events.

YSOC Goals
YSOC provides an experience in music which is both educational and fun. Singers will have the opportunity to learn, perform and give back to the community. Singers can also elect to audition for a performing group and work towards becoming a student choir director.

Our Mission
To inspire appreciation of the arts and a love of singing.
To increase children's team building skills, performance skills, and self-confidence.
To educate children about the importance of giving back to the community.
To provide opportunity for youth to develop leadership and organizational skills.

FAQ Common Questions:

Q: What if I've never sung before?
A: No experience is needed! We welcome new singers and are thrilled to help you learn and develop your vocal talents and abilities.

Q: How old do I have to be to join YSOC?

A: YSOC is for children from age 5 to middle-school - typically until about 14 years old, though we don't exclude anyone who is still in school - even high school. We have opportunities for high school students in the performing group and as apprentice choir directors.

Q: How much does it cost to join?
A: An annual $100 registration fee includes printed materials and your YSOC T-shirt. Need based scholarships are available. Our goal is to eventually provide a completely free service for all our members, but donations are gratefully accepted.

Q: Will I get to perform in public?
A: YSOC participates frequently in public and private performances, both as small groups and the whole choir.

Q: What will I be learning?
A: Our curriculum is based on a series of Master Classes taught by invited professional musicians and voice coaches, which are run every 3-4 weeks. Each rehearsal builds on the themes of these classes, developing a comprehensive curriculum over the year that includes work on such themes as harmony, rhythm, lead and backing vocals, performance technique, vocal health, and many other aspects of singing. Rehearsals also incorporate a music theory class, taught by a college music education major.

Q: Who will be teaching me?
A:  Our full-time instructors are high school and college volunteers, trained by Samantha Smith or other music professionals. They develop the concepts introduced in our Master Class program as they teach new songs, and prepare the choir for public performances. Our focus is always to stay young, vibrant and relevant to our young singers

Q: Who started YSOC?
A: The founder and president of YSOC is Samantha Smith, a singer-songwriter from Orange County, who performs and records as "Sam Avalon". Created in 2009 as her high school senior project, Sam has since graduated from Vassar College and is currently employed at the Japanese Ashinaga Foundation, where she is opening a new facility to support education for AIDS orphans in Senegal, Africa. Sam continues as President of YSOC, and is in regular communication with her team and the Board of Directors via Skype.
